Anyone who has spent a bit of time in Dublin will be familiar with the Donut Kiosk on O’Connell St – especially the distinctive smell, as you walk past. In recent years, the family business has expanded to include four snazzy shops in prime locations across town.

“Rolling Since 1978” says the sign in South King St store, a nod to a time when Michael Quinlan began selling donuts on the very same street, at the legendary Dandelion markets. On the opposite wall you’ll find a photo of him with his original stall.

The two latest outlets were opened by daughter Lisa Quinlan, who also owns the Wildflower Cafe in Co. Meath. The décor was inspired by her favourite donut shops in London and New York and has a minimalist black and white finish with some wood and exposed brick.

The sourdough donuts, made fresh daily, with homemade glazes and toppings, normally sell out by the afternoon. Try the popular ‘Dub’ – covered in chocolate ganache and filled with vanilla custard or the ‘Pistachio and Salted Caramel’. There are vegan options available.

Given that they only sell two products, the Rolling Donut crew take their coffee very seriously. Coffee Culture do the roasting and Clement and Pekoe supply the teas.
