Thomas ‘Last of the Dublin Characters’ Dudly, was often seen pointing a large key at unsuspecting passers-by and shouting the words that earned him his nickname: Bang Bang. A giant key hangs over the entrance to this cafe/ deli in his honour.
Tucked away on a quiet residential street in within earshot of Dalymount Park stadium lies one of Dublin’s eccentric eateries. Bang Bang is a small business with a simple has a simple philosophy – support local.
A dedicated Bohemian FC fan, Bang Bang’s owner Daniel Lambert committed a year solely to saving the club’s home from demolition – with success. Soon after he opened this charming cafe /deli with his sister, Grace, who had recently brought back a newfound appreciation for food from Australia.
The menu keeps it simple: there’s a popular Breakfast Bap, daily sandwiches, and a homemade vegan burger, which can be served as a wrap or salad. Cakes from Paleo Man and Project 12 Bakery, in Smithfield, are available. Neighbours Silverskin supply the coffee, and leftover grinds to are offered to customers as fertiliser.
The delicatessen side is stocked high with Irish produce. Vintage clothing and pre-loved vinyl are also for sale. Patrons are invited to choose a song the 90s-tinged soundtrack from the old jukebox, which is perched next to one of Daniel’s primary school’s desks. The walls are covered in record sleeves from popular Dublin bands. The little space left is filled with local artists’ works.
Please note: There is no table seating, only bar a counter.
