Urbun started life as a market stall run by two school friends. When they opened the first cafe of its kind in Cabinteely, in 2011, their philosophy was to provide a welcoming hub for the locals – somewhere to grab a good coffee and catch up with friends over no-fuss food.
Now run solely by Katie Gilroy (former Food Editor for Totally Dublin), the wholesome, community vibe is still a driving force. As mellow folk music mingles with the buzz of conversation, you’re as likely to spot a midweek business lunch fuelled by Badger and Dodo coffee, as you are groups of mums enjoying afternoon snack.
Designers abgc (Bunsen, Bibis) have used salvaged timber and tiles to add character to the industrial, concrete space, while repurposed coffee sack cushions offer a quirky touch. Cards, candles and other wares are available in the compact retail section.
Although there are plenty of options for the coeliac or vegan customer, Urbun doesn’t bow to food fads or trends, instead preferring to focus on simple food, done well, using quality ingredients. Try the ‘Sambo of the Mo Mo’ based around free range chicken, or a ‘Breakfast Bun’ with Donal Hick’s sausages and North Wicklow eggs.
